GROWING THROUGH CONNECTION
Rooted in Community
At Skylark Children’s Academy, we believe learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our role as educators is not only to prepare children for what comes next, but also to help them discover the world around them, appreciate the people who make up their community, and find their own place within it.

A Curriculum Inspired by the World Around Us
Each month, we explore a Character Trait of the Month, helping children build the social and emotional skills that shape how they interact with others. Through everyday classroom experiences and intentional conversations, children practice kindness, empathy, respect, and other qualities that help them become thoughtful, confident members of their community.
We also celebrate a Language of the Month, drawing on the diverse experiences of our staff and families to introduce children to new languages and cultures. From hearing Native American languages and experiencing traditional dances to learning French vocabulary while exploring the art of Claude Monet, our children discover that there are many wonderful ways to communicate, create, and experience the world. Celebrations such as Diwali offer opportunities to learn about meaningful cultural traditions and how families around the world celebrate together.
These experiences nurture curiosity, broaden perspectives, and help children appreciate both the differences that make us unique and the connections we share.
Learning From Our Community
Some of the most memorable learning experiences happen when the world comes directly to us. Through regular on-campus visits and interactive experiences, we connect classroom learning to the people, places, and professions that shape life in Central Oregon.
Our children have explored recycling with our local waste management team, learned about public safety directly from Bend Police officers, discovered how they can help prevent wildfires with a visit from Smokey Bear, and experimented with hands-on STEM activities through the Children’s Museum of Central Oregon.
These experiences bring new concepts to life. Children get to ask questions, meet community helpers, explore unfamiliar ideas, and begin to understand how they, too, can make a difference in the world around them.

Bringing Our Families Together
Community at Skylark extends beyond the school day. Throughout the year, we create opportunities for families to connect, build friendships, and share in the joy of childhood.
Our annual Trunk-or-Treat offers a special Halloween celebration exclusively for Skylark families, while our community-wide Truck Time event invites children to explore an exciting lineup of vehicles from across Bend and Redmond. From getting up close to big trucks and specialized equipment to climbing aboard and taking the wheel, children have the opportunity to discover how these vehicles work and the important roles they play in our community.
These shared experiences are about more than fun. They help strengthen the relationships between families, create lasting childhood memories, and foster the sense of belonging that makes a school community special.
A Community of Readers
A love of reading opens doors to new ideas, places, and possibilities. At Skylark, that love is nurtured in part by our Assistant Director, Ms. Mary, a former librarian who brings her passion for books and storytelling into our classrooms.
Each week, Ms. Mary curates a collection of library books for every classroom, introducing children to new stories, familiar favorites, and age-appropriate topics that spark imagination and conversation. She also helps children discover the wonderful resource that is their local library, encouraging them to see reading as something to enjoy, explore, and carry with them long after their time at Skylark.
By surrounding children with engaging books and enthusiastic readers, we help lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
